Do It Yourself

Do it yourself for experimental work in high school classes

PROJECT:

“Do It Your Self” is used to describe the design of something without the aid of professionals. We thought about adapting this principle to build experimental works for teaching in science. In fact, a lot of third world countries lack means to carry out experimental works, which are necessary for an easy learning in science. We plan to design protocols that could be applied without expensive tools.

The first move for the project was to design questionnaires in five languages (French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese) to learn more about the needs in education all over the world. They’ve been sent to teachers in Africa, Asia, America and Europe. We hope by this mean to be able to define the needs and design some protocols that could adress them.

The second step will be to design some simple protocols, and test them in high schools around Paris, before uploading them online. The Association Paris-Montagne will be of a great help in achieving our target public.

The outcomes of the survey:

The club is now receiving the first answers to the survey. Up to now, we got 3 answers from France, and one answer from the US, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Armenia. The main outcomes are the following:

-The mean budget for practical classes is below 500 euros/year/teacher.

-The number of students per session is between 10 and 30, and they take in general a weekly session of practical classes.

-In most cases (80%), teachers consider that they don’t have access to the right conditions to teach science.

We are still looking forward for more answers, and try to work in parallel on protocols. These later will be tested during science exhibitions, such as Paris-Montagne festival or “La fête de la science” in October 2010, in Paris, France.
